Ever Wondered about the Origins of the Riding Helmet?

Did you know that the original purpose of a riding helmet was for Fashion! Still referred to as a “riding hat” in many parts of Europe, bowlers and top hats were popular with foxhunters in the 19th and 20th centuries because they were stylish. Even today, high level dressage riders will often be seen doing their routines while wearing the top hat – a tall hat with a broad brim and flat top.

For the rest of us, riding helmets provide essential protection from serious head injuries. Widely accepted within the English equestrian community, its use is increasing in other disciplines as well, and is usually required in competitive show venues, even Western events for riders under 18.

Although the design of the riding helmet has come a long way in aesthetics, covers that fit over the riding helmet can give a sense of style, and allows you coordinate your hat with your saddle pad, polo wraps or pennies. Even Combined Driving, in which the drivers traditionally wore big flowery hats, has begun to require helmets. The answer to the big hat? Use a helmet cover with big flowery prints!

There is really no limit to what you can do with a helmet cover. Use your imagination to create a theme. Create a Halloween costume for you and your horse. Identify yourself as a member of a riding club, pony club or drill team using team colors – and even embroider your logo on the cover.

So, we have come “Full Circle” with our idea of fashionable head gear. From the early riding hats that were stylish, but except for keeping the sun and rain off your head, were mostly useless; to high-tech engineered helmets designed for safety, BUT with the option to make your own fashion statement using colors, designs and Bling!!
